Yarn P0rn

So here are the contents of the box from Knit Picks that came yesterday. Yummy!

Check out this little baby! I know that boiling yarn to dye it is going to change my yardage and, when I saw this, I just HAD to have it! I thought about finding myself a Niddy Noddy but this just seemed like it would be a lot easier because I tend to lose count easily.

This lovely stash is for Starsky. I know it’s a little tough to see but it’s a dusty navy.

I’ve come to the conclusion that my interchangeable needle kit got accidently tossed in the trash along with some yarn and a circular by a well-meaning DH. I’ll never tell him it’s his fault because it’s not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things. So I decided to give these a try.

For these lovelies, I plan a lace-bottomed sweater (periwinkle) and the candle flame shawl from Knit Picks. It’ll be my first true lace project since I’m taking a break from the lace-topped socks I’ve been trying to make. They’re getting ripped tomorrow. I just didn’t have the energy because I spent the evening winding up laceweight yarn.

See? 400+ yards per skein. My arm is tired.

What a smile…

Happy SIL with her new, silk scarf.

I went by Wild Fiber after work today and, if you can believe it, I didn’t find a thing. I was looking specifically for Socks that Rock but they only had 3 hanks left in colors that I wasn’t really in to. They took my number and promised to call with a shipment update on Thursday.

I went to my boss’ house after that. She had a Pampered Chef party. I hate stuff like that but went because I knew she was just trying to help out a friend. As per usual, I was the youngest one there. These ladies were so far beyond what I can imagine my life being. Relatively priveledged, all with children ranging in age from 19 on down to 9. One of them was a housewife and I had a lot of trouble wrapping my head around that. What would it be like to be a housewife? I imagine my house would be a lot cleaner and that I’d get a lot more knitting done too.

The main issue was that I knew my box from Knit Picks arrived today so I was just antsy as all hell. I just wanted to get home and tear open the box. I wasn’t disappointed but I’ll have to share pics tomorrow. It’s late and I’m friggin’ tired.

I don’t know if I’m going to make it to We-Ho this week. My SIL wants me to go to dinner with her (DH has a gig so we’ll actually have some time togther alone). But all is not lost. She may change her mind. I’ll know when she calls me mid-day. I had so much fun last week that I’m bummed to be missing it but SIL does live two states away so I suppose it would just be rude if I didn’t choose her over the S&B.

C is in the house!

Hello, folks! Please welcome C to the Blogger-sphere. She’s done blogs elsewhere but has come over to the dark side.

What can I say about C? She’s brilliant, ambitious and exciting. She’s goofy when she needs to be and knows how to enjoy a good beer on occasion. She’s talented, gifted, well informed/read and she’s on a mission crusade for the greater good of the universe and, possibly, to save the space-time continuum. The objective is to call attention to stupidity and denial of reality that is happening to our world, especially for those who are so tired of the insanity that they’ve isolated themselves and turned a blind-eye. And she knits.

While the blog is still new and we don’t know how much in the way of knitting content will be present, I guarantee you it will always be a fascinating read. Please pop over to Parabola and say hello.

Weird

You Are 50% Weird

Normal enough to know that you’re weird…
But too damn weird to do anything about it!

I’m sorry but I believe I deserve a far higher score.

Daily Dose

In case you haven’t had your daily dose of cuteness, here’s Baby Halley.

Update on the toe-up socks. The short story: I’m creating my own friggin’ pattern using the lace pattern from the one I was trying to use.

After reworking the heel for the 5th time, I frogged them all the way back. It wasn’t so much the heel by the 3rd time, it was more that the instructions for the length were so far off it’s silly. There’s no way that a woman’s size 9 is only 7.5″ long.

So I cast on a wider toe (probably a little too wide but perfect for my stubby foot) and started to work it up on smaller needles as well. Sock yarn on #2 just makes such a loose stitch and I wasn’t diggin’ it. So, smaller needles, wider toe… I worked it until it was about 3.5″ wide and then worked a few rounds knit. I was looking at it this morning and, while this would be fine, indeed for a size 9 foot with stubby toes, it’s not fine for my size 8 foot. I’ll only have to frog about 15 minutes worth of work and remove one round of decreases… erm…. maybe two rounds of decreases. I better try it on before frogging.

The battle is over….

… and the dust has cleared. Behold! I have triumphed! I’m really very fond of these. They’ll look really sassy with my brown, suede Sketchers. Even though purple is my favorite color, I don’t have any purple shirts other than my FlyLady t-shirts. And they’re not quite the right color of purple. This is something that I must remedy. The answer is that I’ll be wearing these anyhow, purple shirt or no. I don’t’ think I even have a brown shirt to match… a quick glance at the closet confirms that.

These took almost exactly one ball each of Lana Grossa Merino Big Print. I’d purchased 3 balls… Which leaves about enough for a pair of short socks… like bobby socks or something. But since I don’t need two pairs from the same yarn, I’m offering this third up to a raffle. Anyone who posts a comment here goes into the raffle to be drawn next Wednesday. But if you don’t want the yarn, let me know in your comment. ;-) I think I might even still have the label hanging around somewhere. Warning: This is NOT a smoke free home. While I could stick my nose in the ball and not detect smoke smell, I recognize that a non-smoker’s nose is a bit better for detecting it.

Last Thursday, I went to the We-Ho (West Hollywood) Stitch ‘N Bitch. Uccellina talked me into going (thought she didn’t have to talk too much…) and I really enjoyed myself even though traffic on the way SUCKED! I met lots of hip chicks and there was a lot of laughing to be had. I learned a bit while I was there. I learned that Miss Kendra kicks ass and likes vegan cookies. I learned that Monkey Gurrrl has something positive to say about MANY different kinds of men, from short Jewish guys to Conan O’Brien. I learned that Monster Crochet is an artist in the true sense of the word. And I learned that Uccellina is just cute as a button and one of the sweetest people I’ve met in a long time. Yes, buttons are cute. Shut up! They are too!

Currently I’m struggling with the heel on these socks. What’s with all the pointy toed stuff? I’m seriously tempted to rip the whole thing and start over with a wider toe although the yarn stretches fine. I have a stubby foot so I guess it’s just me. The short-row heel on this baby requires wrapping stitches. I had to do a frantic web-search to figure out how the hell this is accomplished. I’ve worked the heel twice and did another web-search to figure out what the hell I’m doing wrong. I’m going to rip it again and try it again. When this sock is finished, it’s supposed to look like this. I’m not sure about all the lacy but I tend to let my socks bunch up around my ankles anyhow so I’m sure it will be just fine.

So, I’ve been knitting away on these socks that are currently pissing me off but M’s gansey is calling to me from the closet. Poor, neglected sweater. Sometimes I’m far too ambitious for my own good. Although I can handle the pattern just fine, the size of the circulars are making me positively batty. The cord is just barely long enough so I find I’m constantly scrunching everything which is making it take more time than it should. Poor M won’t have a chance to wear it until next Fall anyhow. Summer comes quickly in LA.

Quandary

They are releasing the inmates from the asylum closing the office early today. I want to go look at pretty fiber and touch yarn but part of me is screaming about all the lovelies I have at home. Well, I really do want to go by maybe Wild Fiber and get #2 Addi Turbos on super long cord because the Susan Bates… well, it’s just difficult to work with when so much yarn is crammed on there!

And I need zippers for the little bags I have planned but those can wait until later. Perhaps just Wild Fiber… God I’m bad for me.

Hey! This looks familiar

This looks just like the house I grew up in… not the design so much as what’s in it. Except we had a gun cabinet instead of a rack….

clicky clicky

Are my roots showing?
