My friend, Ritchie

This is Ritchie. I’ve known him for about 9 years. He is a friend in the true sense of the word. When M’s life went to hell, Ritchie was there. When M’s late wife became so ill that she could no longer care for herself, Ritchie helped M in any way he could. When M couldn’t afford to pay the bills, raising his son on his own with an ill wife in the hospital, Ritchie paid the bills for him.

When Tom was in the hospital, Ritchie was there. Ritchie and his wife were ever-present through every step of Tom’s illness. I always saw Ritchie at all the gigs that Tom and M would play together. Ritchie is a master of all instruments and a visionary artist.

When people disappeared as our loved ones ailed, Ritchie stayed. When M and I made the choice to move to Washington and leave so many we care about behind, most were angry or hurt that we were leaving. Ritchie helped us pack to let us know he still loved us, even though we were leaving.

Early this afternoon, we received the news that Ritchie has been stricken with bone cancer. While he has not been given a death sentence, we are very sad today. I’m sad that I’m not there to cook dinner to drop off for his wife to give her one less thing to worry about today. I’m sad that we’re not there to keep an eye on him and poke fun when he starts taking himself too seriously. Most importantly, I’m not there to tell his wife that cancer will not take her darling Ritchie the way it took my beloved Tom.

Ritchie is only a couple years older than my M. He’s a long time band-mate and he’s family. This cancer is one that is not easy to beat but, fortunately, it is one that may take many years to cause problems. Ritchie may well live into his 80’s before he becomes ill with the proper care and treatment.

But still, we are very sad today.

Dental woes

There’s a rather large chunk of tooth that has been missing since Christmas. I’m not happy. I’ll be on a soup diet for the next 4 days. Grrrr… All that Christmas chocolate out there and I can’t partake. :-(

Blogger conversion

I’m slowly converting my blog over to the new version of Blogger. Slowly. Not that anyone checks blogs on the weekends but I’ll be doing some playing around. Rumor has it that things may not work very well for the first few days, until I get it all figured out. Until then, please bear with me if things go all wonky.

I have no knitting content today. I’ve been working on a couple new patterns for some socks which I will be happy to share once they’ve proved themselves out. So I’ll leave you with some critter pictures.

Here’s a rather insistent Luna attacking the neighbor kid for some treats.

Here’s Mr. Mew after attacking the neighbor kid for treats. I don’t know what was in those treats. Must have been good.

Xmas Joy

We spent the weekend at the in-laws and I was able to deliver a wee bit of hand-made joy to the MIL. Doesn’t she look lovely??? It’s amazing what the right piece of knit-wear can do to the most unwilling of models.

Project: Wavy stole
Yarn: Bernat Satin
Colorway: Coastal
Pattern: Made up on the spot to utilize this yarn. If there is interest in this pattern, let me know and I can post the details.

Merry, Merry!

I hope y’all had a lovely Christmas, whether or not you celebrate the holiday. Around here, not a creature was stirring, not even Mr. Mew.

We spent the weekend at the in-laws. The one knitted gifty I made was a huge hit. Photos of that tomorrow. For now, here is some spinnery goodness to hold you over.

I think that this will be socks. The flecky blue stuff you see is nylon so the batts were, indeed, meant to end up as socks.

This needs to be socks. Don’t you agree?

A contest winner and updates

Hello, folks. Thank you for hanging in there with me through all the insanity that is the weather.

Y’all had me laughing so damned hard at all your lovely captions. Of course, it was impossible to choose a favorite so I used a random number generator to choose for me. Congratulations, Kenyetta! Email me your address, lady! sachis 2112 at yahoo dot com

On to the updates. I’ll give you busy people bullet points and you can read in more detail below.

1. Power is up. We’re fine. Internet is functioning.
2. 2 FO’s will be posted in the next couple days.
3. DH is doing fine.
4. The new issue of Spindlicity is up!!!!!
5. The dentist was kind to me this morning.

Now, the details.

1. As most of you are aware, a storm of serious strength moved through the Puget Sound area last Thursday night, into Friday morning. Every 10 years or so, a storm moves through here where the wind blows from the opposite direction than normal. With the ground super-saturated from our record-breaking rain fall in November, this was of great concern. Since I work the “Open Line” for the county, we are partially emergency response for roads, storm water, etc. The 911 call center dispatches a lot of calls to us in order to get “Road Closed” signs delivered and things of that nature.

With the storm on its way, the decision was made during the day on Thursday that I would go home, sleep if I could, and report to the Roads Department by midnight to handle the storm emergencies. My town is the county seat so our offices are across the street at the Court House. We lost power at the office around 4:15 PM on Thursday. That didn’t bode well. This area of town very rarely loses power. I can’t remember in all my 30 years that it has ever lost power. I left the office and started making my way home, stopping at the grocery store on the way. I figured I’d grab something quick for dinner and stock up for the overnight. (The guys at the road shop have a thing for Snickers.) As I stood in line with my spaghetti-sauce-in-a-jar and several Cup Noodle packages, the power blew. So much for the spaghetti. We all have electric stoves around here and it would take forever to boil noodles on top of the wood stove. So I grabbed a roasted chicken and about 10 more Cup Noodles.

After reporting in at midnight, when the storm was supposed to really kick up, the radios and phones were going so fast that I couldn’t keep up. Any time a tree fell across power lines, there are a series of calls/motions we have to go through to secure the area and makes sure that everyone knows what’s going on.

All those guys have a real attitude of go-get-’em. They don’t shy away from much. But these guys were scared. Trees were coming down all around them while they were out there on the roads. They could hear them snapping as they drove and they were in serious danger of getting hit. I’m happy to report that we only had one fire as a result of power lines but the main reason for that is that absolutely no one in the entire county had power. There wasn’t any electricity left on the entire peninsula to cause any lines to spark.

Some people still don’t have power. The word is that they may not get power back until after Christmas. Damn, that sucks!

2. I finished a pair of boot socks for DH. He loves them and I think they are beautiful. We haven’t taken pictures yet. Partially because I’m lazy and partially because there was no way to upload them anyhow. I have also finished a stole for the MIL for X-mas. I’m going to try to get pictures of her wearing it.

3. DH is doing just fine and dandy these days. We had a lot of trouble over the last month or so due to some depression issues. Not like full blown clinical depression. Just sadness over not having any local friends and from not feeling well. We made some headway in finding him some docs to check up on him here and there and we realized that one of his meds, when it leaves his body, actually causes feelings of dispair. Well, no wonder the poor guy was feeling so nasty! He’s really feeling quite good today.

4. The new issue of Spindlicity is up!!! Yay!!!! I was sort of waiting for it with bated breath, hoping that my roving report of the Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival would be posted but it wasn’t to be. Truth be told, I think the OFFF just can’t compete with SOAR or Rhinebeck in scope and poor Janel likely had to make the choice to leave mine out. The poor thing was in stress-overload the last month or so. She once told me that every issue of this is almost like giving birth. It’s a labor of love but she has to hide herself away the entire week before the each issue goes live and she probably passes out for 24 hours after uploading. This issue is packed full of fantastically fun articles. I always learn something new!!

5. In the middle of everything that has been going on, I lost part of a filling. Not normally a huge deal. I started getting cold sweats thinking of the cost and such since I’m not currently insured. But it won’t cost me much. The doc thinks I might have cracked a tooth but all will be well. I have a bit of dentist anxiety so it didn’t help the situation but it looks like he’s completely fine with me taking something to make me snoozy before the appointment. I like that.

That’s about it for now, boys and girls. That’s what’s happening in my life. The dogs are good. The cats… well they’re fine but you know how cats can be sometimes. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I should be caught up with reading all your blogs some time in the next week. I hope. I’m not scheduled to work until after Christmas so I’m hoping to get through a whole bunch tonight.

Cheers, kiddos. I hope you have been behaving yourselves.

Intermittent blogging

Power has been down around these parts, restored to our home yesterday with interenet access coming up today. However, we have no idea whether or not the power will stay, or the web access for that matter.

I promise that I’ll tell you all about my adventures working the emergency line for the night shift during the storm that blew through here Thursday night.

Go Seahawks!

The Hawks have a game tonight. Go Seahawks! The down side, there’s supposed to be a fierce wind storm kicking up this afternoon.

I’ve decided to extend the contest deadline through Monday. Wander over, leave a funny caption, win pretty things.

M and I wandered off to Seattle with the folks for the first time since I’ve been back. Didn’t exactly get a whole lot of shopping done. But I did manage to get this picture of M and me. We don’t have many pictures of us together so this is lovely.

Ahem! Notice the lovely hand-knit hat. It’s the first thing I ever made for him. :-) Oh yeah… I made the ascot as well.

OK. And I know this sounds funny to the casual observer but… I actually look Japanese in this picture. I didn’t even look this Japanese when I was wearing a Kimono. Heehee… I’m easily amused.

Q&A time

From way back when, here are my answers to your questions. Don’t worry. I’m not tagging anyone.

Laurie Ann asked: Why am I more tired on days when I have done nothing than on days when I’m up early and busy all day?

Answer: This is due to the scientific principle of inertia. An object in motion will tend to stay in motion.

Fyberduck asked: Why isn’t your hair purple anymore??

Answer: Purple hair is very much frowned upon in the corporate world. Since I’m not yet at a stage in life where I can make money off my true talents, I must work for The Man. The Man does not like snotty kids and The Man likes purple hair even less. In order to work for The Man in a position any higher than scrubbing toilets, I must camoflage myself so as to look like a responsible woman.

Dave asked way too many questions but I’m going to answer them anyhow.

Q: What were you doing 15 minutes ago?
A: Working on a logo for a very talented silver smith. Unfortunately I cannot share the logo as he has been screwed by past partners so much so that he’s frightened someone will find a way to use it against him.

Q: Are you any good at math?
A: I used to think that I wasn’t until I started knitting. I guess you could say that I’m poor at math but I do well with algebra and geometry.

Q: Your prom night, what do you remember about it?
A: We don’t discuss my prom night. No, we don’t discuss that at all…

Q: Do you have any famous ancestors?
A: Not exactly. If you looked in the history books, you would find that my family helped found this town in which I live way back in the early 1900’s. But that’s pretty much my only claim to fame. We’ve had plenty of great relatives who did wonderful things but none that I would consider famous.

Q: Have you had to take a loan out for school?
A: No. I didn’t understand why I would willingly get into debt when I was not gainfully employed. Consequently, I never finished college. But I plan to some day.

Q: Last thing received in the mail?
A: Lovely bag and goodies from Miss Kendra.

Q: How many different beverages have you had today?
A: 3 – Coffee, water and a Dr. Pepper.

Q: Do you ever leave messages on people’s answering machine?
A: Yes. Often.

Q: Who did you lose your CONCERT virginity to?
A: That’s sort of a trick question for me. My first concert ever was Manhattan Transfer. Then I went to a couple of killer music festivals in Germany a couple months later. Then I went to see the Violent Femmes a couple months after that. But my first enormous, filled amphitheater type of concert was Rush.

Q: Do you draw your name in the sand when you go to the beach?
A: No, but I have been known to draw pictures or just to squiggle.

Q: What is out your back door?
A: Mt. Rainier.

Q: Any plans for Friday night?
A: Nothing beyond spending time with my M.

Q: Do you like what the ocean does to your hair?
A: I can’t remember the last time I swam in the ocean. I have issues. Don’t judge.

Q: Have you ever received one of those big tins of 3 different popcorns?
A: Yes. I dare say a few too many. But I’m always happy to get one, as long as I don’t get more than one in a year.

Q: Have you ever been to a planetarium?
A: Yes.

Q: Do you re-use towels after you shower?
A: Yes

Q: Some things you are excited about?
A: The possibility of locking in a killer job after the first of the year.

Q: What is your favorite flavor of JELL-O?
A: I’m not sure. Possibly cherry.

Q: Describe your keychain(s)?
A: Fancy keys for the car equiped with chips, little purple LED thingy, and a belt loop clip that unbuttons from the rest of the chain.

Q: Where do you keep your change?
A: In my purse, in a little zipper pouch that was a birthday gift from a friend. It has a picture of a monkey on it. Sachi likes monkies. At home, in a giant water bottle.

Q: When was the last time you spoke in front of a large group of people?
A: Gosh…. That’s a toughy…. I think it’s been at least 8 years. A group of more than 20 anyhow. Less than 20, less than 2 years.

Q: What kind of winter coat do you own?
A: Funky green, felt jacket from Nordstroms. Knee length.

Q: What was the weather like on your graduation day?
A: Overcast. I don’t remember much.

Q: Do you sleep with the door to your room open or closed?
A: We prefer open but sometimes have to close it due to overheating from the woodstove.
